Hi everybody,
for those who're not using the LJ voice post feature, I've put together a kind of manual of how uploading on our Tindeck account works to make it easier for you. I hope I didn't forget anything and my explanations make sense; please let me know if not.
Since Tindeck uses flash for their online player as well as the embedded player, people with mobile devices can't listen to these. Direct MP3 download works, though, so it would be lovely if you could include such a link already in your reading entry. (See how this works below). Otherwise I will provide the MP3 link when the chapter goes up in this entry. (I'm going to edit this in bit by bit into the old chapter entries, too, where necessary.)
You can find this later on easily by the link to "Manual" in the Links List on the right.
This manual will hopefully help you to upload and share your reading file onto the Tindeck account of our community, read lotr aloud.
To upload, you'll need the password which will be given to you by one of us mods. Please understand that for new readers, we prefer to do the upload ourselves. Once your reading has been uploaded, it can be found at the link given above (you might need to click profile to see the list of readings). As soon as your reading is uploaded, you can also access the sharing options mentioned below. New readers will be given the necessary code after we have uploaded their readings.
Uploading to Tindeck:
To upload your reading, first click on the Upload Button. Then click on File, choose the file from your computer, check the small box below and then click on Start Upload. Depending on the file size, the upload will take a few minutes.
Once it's finished, you're seeing a page with Track Details.
As all files appear in the order of uploading, we need a consistent scheme to make chapter parts easy to find later on. Please use the following scheme so the audio files are all similar in appearance.
For Artist, please put in just your own name.
For Title, please put in Book XX, Chapter YY, Part ZZ, Chapter Title as given to you with your assignment.
For Licensing, please select "allow download" so people can also access the MP3 files, but nothing else, since the other options don't attribute to our readings.
For Genres, please select "podfic" and speech".
Click on Save Track Information and you're done.
The Track Art will be provided later by one of us mods.
Using Tindeck for presenting your reading:
You have various options for presenting your reading in your reading entry with Tindeck.
The most simple is just linking to your reading with a plain text link, like this: Here is my reading. (I'm using one of my readings as an example.) The listener will be guided to the file which will start playing immediately.
Tindeck offers various sharing options, too, like an embedded stats grafic with the link to the reading, an embedded player allowing the listener to stay on your LJ entry and listen, and a direct link for MP3 download. Please notice that the direct link to your reading as well as the embedded player need flash to work. This means these don't work on any mobile device and also not if your browser hasn't installed or forbids the usage of flash.
To find these sharing options, you need to click on the green link at the right of your reading on Tindeck, called Get Embed / Link Code.
In order to make your reading easily accessible for everybody, it would be best to provide not only the direct link to the reading or the embedded player, but also a link for direct MP3 download.
*Direct Link gives you the code for a direct link to your reading which will start to play immediately, it is the same as if you just copy the link of your reading from the URL bar. This needs flash to work.
*Embedded Stats gives you a small graphic showing the stats of your reading and providing a direct link to your reading. This needs flash to work.
Example:

*Direct File Hotlink allows you to create a direct link for MP3 download on your site, so your reading can also be accessed by those who can't use flash.
To create such a link in the rich text editor of LJ, first type in the text for the link you want, like "MP3 Download". Then go to your reading with the sharing options, copy the code under "Direkt File Hotlink" and go back to where you want to post the link. Select the link text you typed earlier, then click on the "insert link" button and paste the code into the window which has opened, and click on the blue "insert" button in this window. That's it.
This works for everybody, but they need to download the file and have an MP3 player software or app to listen.
Example:
Download MP3 file here.
*Embedded Player allows you to have the listeners stay on your LJ entry while listening, which is particularly nice for those who like to read the text you might have provided, too. This needs flash to work.
