Banner for the Hobbit Day 2017
Although we aren't back yet to the usual reading routine, we still wanted to hold a special reading day in honour of Bilbo's and Frodo's birthday today. So, pic out something Hobbit-related and read! It can be a scene from the books, a scene from one of your favorite fanfics, something Tolkien might have said about either of them in his Letters, or perhaps something someone else has written about them in some other sort of non-fiction--just so long as it features one or both of our favorite Bagginses or refers to them in any way.

How to proceed: either make a post with your reading in your own journal (needs to be unlocked) or in [community profile] rla_readings, and comment to this post with the link to your reading post. You can also just comment here with the link to your reading, or just with any kind of birthday greetings to the Bagginses.
I'll add the links to the readings to this post as they come in. Make sure to check in occasionally to see about new readings (or track the entry to get notifications), and please also consider leaving a comment to the reader!
There's no time limit to contributions, so feel free to add your reading as late as it gets!

Note
: We've started to mirror all entries on LJ and DW from now on. Some of our members are no longer on LJ, but on DW only, so make sure to check both journals for comments, although you'll find the links to the readings from both sides here in this entry as soon as I've caught up with them. Hobbit Day 2017 on LJ | on DW

Technical note: You might've already noticed that voice recording no longer works on LJ. This means some of you might need to find alternative options for recording. Using a smartphone works, although you might need to get an extra app which also provides mp3 files. If you've got any troubles recording, please contact me by message or email at [ysilme69@gmail.com] so we can find a solution for you. I'm unfortunately not fully availiable this weekend due to rehersals and a big choir performance, but from Sunday evening on it won't be a problem.

Hi everybody,

I'm awfully sorry it's been taken again so long; you know how it is when RL happens. The list of the missing readings has been completed already a couple of weeks ago, but I managed only to polish it up for posting. Since lots of things happened in between, namely LJ posting their new TOS and  demanding acknowledgement to be able to access your journal, the list might not even be up to date any more; but I'm afraid I don't have the time to go over it again right now, so let's work with what we have now and see if we can backup as many readings as possible.

Speaking of LJ and the new TOS: among many other things it seems that since then, journals and probably also communities have been deleted by LJ because they contained external links. I don't know enough to say if our community is in danger, or any of the journals/entries of our readers. But to be on the safe side, we mods decided to pre-empt something we wanted to discuss with you all anyway, created a mirror community on Dreamwidth, and made a full backup of all of our entries so they won't be lost. For the moment, our Dreamwidth Mirror is just that, and we still want to and will discuss with you how to proceed from here, and to incorporate DW to what degree. One motivation is that a few of our our readers aren't on LJ any longer, but perhaps will also join us again for readings when we mirror the comm on DW, or perhaps even move there. We'll talk about this a bit later, as this post is mainly about the backup of the missing readings. We're not planning to give up the LJ comm unless LJ forces us to or deletes it, but our main goal is keeping this project and the community alive and running, and we feel that we can't rely only on LJ any longer for that purpose.

I'm manually crossposting this also already on DW for the sake of those of us who are no longer here on LJ. It would be awesome if you could also point anybody to whom this applies here at this post on LJ or Dw. Thank you!

***

Here's the list of the missing readings. It's a google doc, I hope you can access it without problems. Let me know if you're having any issues!

List of Missing Readings

If you find yourself on the list and still have the reading(s) in question, or access to them, it would be lovely if we could save your reading somewhere accessible, so they won't be lost.
If you know somebody who's on the list and who hasn't reacted to these recent posts yet, but still might have kept their readings, it would be awesome if you'd let them know.

Unfortunately, I'll be travelling from July 15th to August 6th with unreliable internet access and no leisure to take care of fannish things, and as my co-mods are also rather busy these days, I'm afraid most things will have to be postponed until I'm back. But since things at LJ have become somewhat unpredictable, it seems to me the most important thing would be for the moment to make sure your readings are safe also outside of LJ.

If you're saved your readings on a hosting service, I think it's not urgent to backup them; in this case it would be lovely if you could just let me know and we could work something out starting in August when I'm back.
If you've posted your readings by LJ voice post, the easiest way to save them would be to save them to your hard-drive. To do this, you just need to right-click on the link that says "voice post" and choose "save target as". Please make sure to rename your file in a manner that it's possible to know what reading it is; best put book, chapter and if possible the number of your part in the file name. Once I'm back we can find out which would be the most convenient way to convey these files to me, so I can add them to the general backup of our readings. You can also already email me your readings, if you like (please state in your email subject also book, chapter, number of your part if possible, and your reader's name if not obvious from the email address); please sent them to . My storage there hopefully will be sufficient; however, if you run into any troubles sending something to this email, please contact vaysh or send your files to her as an alternative, .

In August, we're also planning to finally get the next chapter reading under way, and we'll have a poll for you to find out what everybody's current possibilities and preferences are for recording, listening, and participating.

Thank you all for your patience and your cooperation! We're happy to see that you're still with us, and we'd be more than happy to see old faces reappear as well as welcome new ones!

Hi everybody,

as you know I'm working at backing up all of our past readings, so the sound files are kept at least. This hasn't been an urgent project before, but with the recent changes of LJ's TOS some people are deleting their journals, and other journals might have been deleted due to inactivity.

So I would like to ask you all for help:
*if you've done a reading for RLA in the past and plan to delete your journal, please let me or one of the other mods know so we might save your readings with priority. If you could postpone the deletion for a bit to help us, that would be awesome!
*if you haven't used your journal for a while, please log in and just post something so it's no longer inactive.
*if you know of someone whose journal is inactive or palns to delete their journal, and you can contact them, please spread the word!

I'm back as far as July 2012 with my backups, and here's the list of all readers who had participated from that date onwards. If you know others who aren't on the list yet, please let me know in the comments!
The striked trough names are deleted journals. I know rlaadmin's readings are lost, sadly, as they were done by voice post, but arcadiaego uploaded many of them and might have stored them on their computer. If any of you is in contact with them still, it would be lovely if you brougth us together, or asked them if they still have their readings.

Thank you all so much!

Edit: I added two more former readers, telstar-gold and moit. Singeaddams and moit's accounts are both flocked, so I can't make any backups.

Edit 2: I now went through all the old readings just to pick up names, so above are all of them. Can I say how much more in awe I'm now about the abundance of readers that have already participated? I already was when I joined, but so much more now. You all rock!!! (Now let's hope we manage to save as much of this as possible!)

Hi everybody,

first, please excuse the long, long silence on our part. Today,we mainly want to let you all know that Read Lord of the Rings Alound still lives, and will continue to do so! This is such an exceptional project and community, and none of us wants to let it die, despite the occasional shorter or longer *coughs* hiatus the community has seen. (Or can we just say that we operate rather on an Entish kind of schedule? ;o) )
Life has interfered over and over again, but while nothign seemed to happen on the surface, [livejournal.com profile] dreamflower02 and I have been working on various plans and ideas how to keep us alive and floating, and how to adapt to modern devices and other issues. Due to the changes in our mutual real and fandom lives, dreamflower and I agreed that from now on, I, [livejournal.com profile] ysilme, will take over as the main responsible person for the community. Furthermore, [livejournal.com profile] vaysh has joined us as staff to the community. *throws confetti* \O/

In the next few days, a new reading announcement will come up. We're also working in the background at saving all the old readings, just in case something happens to this place, and are investigating alternatives for recording, storing and listening where they might come in handy, or become necessary. We're also planning to re-record all readings that have gone missing through technical glitches or deleted journals over time, as the main goal of the community still stands: to have, in the end, a complete reading of the Lord of the Rings, done by us all, the fans, as a community.

We would love to hear from you all! Let us know if you're still there, stil interested in reading, listening, or both, or perhaps want to join us as a new reader. If you're still reading this entry but plan to delete or close your journal, it would be lovely if you'd let us know so we could save your readings. Likewise, if you know of somebody who deleted their journal and have done readings in the past, and have means to contact them, it would be lovely if you asked them to contact us about their readings. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Edit to add: we now know that doing voice posts is no longer possible at LJ, the feature seems to have gone. We're investigating other easy options for recording, and would love to hear if you already have tried out alternatives or are using them.

Here is the new chapter of Read Lotr Aloud: The Two Towers, Book IV, Chapter 6, 'The Forbidden Pool'.

Thank you all for another lovely reading session and keeping this special project going! A heartfelt welcome also to [livejournal.com profile] ellie_nor who joined us for this reading! I hope you had fun and enjoyed the experience.

Over the last chapters, we found that some listeners have problems accessing the files hosted on Tindeck. The reason is Tindeck using the flash player which doesn't work on mobile devices. In this case, you'll find a link to the MP3 file for direct download either in the reading entry or here in the chapter list. The MP3 file should play on your device without problems.

Please don't forget to leave feedback to our readers!

Our next chapter reading for The Two Towers will be in October, for Book IV, Chapter VI, "The Forbidden Pool".
After a hiatus for the holidays, we will begin with the next chapter in January. However, in the meanwhile, we will be having another special project. Some of the links to older readings no longer work. We will be looking for volunteers to help us in re-creating those missing readings, so that we will still have ALL the parts to ALL the chapters.
However, we will still have a Special Reading for September 22. Pick out something Bilbo and/or Frodo oriented to read. It can be a scene from the books, a scene from one of your favorite fanfics, something Tolkien might have said about either of them in his Letters, or perhaps something someone else has written about them in some other sort of non-fiction--just so long as it features one or both of our favorite Bagginses.
You do not have to sign up to participate, but it would be helpful if you'd comment here, so we'd have a general idea of the likely number of participants.

When you have made your post, put a link to it here on this post by the 21st, and on the 22nd, I will post the links! Have fun!

Welcome, everybody, guests as well as regular readers, to the International Tolkien Reading Day 2015 at Read Lord of the Rings aloud!

Everybody is welcome to make a recording with a piece they like, and share it here with the community. The only condition is that it is by Tolkien! :o) The theme this year is friendship, but you can read whatever you like.

Comment to this entry with a link to your recording and a short description what it is about, or leave us a link to a place where you have posted it elsewhere. You don't have to do or post it today, too; as long as your reading was created in the spirit of the Tolkien Reading Day.  We're also offering a participation banner for you here (please link only for use on LJ, otherwise please download).

Please contact me at [livejournal.com profile] the_winterwitch if you need a place where you can upload your reading. I can also help with editing and converting if necessary.

Please check this entry repeatedly; I will insert the info and links to the readings into this entry as they come so they're easier to find.

Now come and join the fun!

Your mods apologize for not mentioning it sooner: [livejournal.com profile] b2mem has taken up a lot of our time. However we'd like to maintain the tradition of special readings for International Read Tolkien Day! So even though it is short notice, we encourage you to make a short reading of any favorite passage from ANY of Tolkien's writings for that date; LJ voicepost is most often used or you can use our Tindeck account details found here or you can use some other method of doing a voice post that you prefer.

You do not need to sign up or get an assignment, and anyone can participate, even if you are not a regular member of the community. Choose any passage you like, do your reading and comment here at this post with the link. You can do your readings all through the day, and we will collect the links on the following day.

Please forgive the last minute nature of the announcement!

Thank you!
